{"id":89,"date":"2023-06-14T19:11:11","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T19:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dmv.wordpress.hull.ac.uk\/?page_id=89"},"modified":"2024-01-01T18:42:25","modified_gmt":"2024-01-01T18:42:25","slug":"glossary","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dmv.wordpress.hull.ac.uk\/index.php\/sources\/glossary\/","title":{"rendered":"Glossary"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dmv.wordpress.hull.ac.uk\/index.php\/sources\/\">Back to Sources<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">List of technical terms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Berewick &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>A term used in the Domesday Book to indicate land that was attached to the <em>Manor<\/em> but was not in the same location \u2013 it was outlying from the place it was controlled from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Croft&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;  <\/strong>             A back garden area to the <em>toft<\/em> where the villager could grow crops and keep animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Crop marks<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Archaeological and natural geological features which can be seen from the air due to differential crop growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Earthworks<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Upstanding archaeological features \u2013 often termed \u2018humps and bumps\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hollow way<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A route way that has been worn down over the years to produce a hollow route through the surrounding area. These are often the main communication routes through the settlement and out into the surrounding field system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hundred&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>An administration district within a shire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Longhouse&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>A typical type of medieval peasant house. There is great regional variety but they are usually long and rectangular with an entrance way in the centre of one or both of the long sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lynchets&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>A type of field system that was formed on steep ground. Lynchets were flat platforms to allow crops to be grown, and often form \u2018flights\u2019 up a hill side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Manor&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>A term used in the Domesday Book and later to signify a territorial and legal landholding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Moated Site<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Often, but not always, rectangular in shape, an area surrounded by a moat that could hold a house, but other uses included orchards, gardens and industrial sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Outlier&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>Used in the context of the Domesday Book to mean the same as <em>berewick<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ridge and Furrow<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The remnants of medieval ploughed fields. The corrugated pattern was formed as the fields were ploughed using a particular method. In some areas these still remain as upstanding <em>earthworks<\/em>, in other areas they can still be seen as <em>crop marks<\/em> in ploughed fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Toft&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>The area surrounding a medieval house. These can vary in size and nature across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Villeins&nbsp; <\/strong>Peasant farmers who were tenants and were tied to the Lord of the <em>manor<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wapentake&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
